Tetley is owned by Tata Consumer Products, part of India’s Tata group. Tata Tea bought the British company in February 2000 for £271 million. At the time it was the largest takeover of a foreign company by an Indian firm. Tetley was founded in Yorkshire in 1837 and brought the tea bag to Britain in 1953. It is still sold as a British brand and is the best-selling tea in Canada.

Who owns Tetley today?
| Level | Who | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | Tetley | Founded 1837 in Yorkshire |
| Owner | Tata Consumer Products Ltd | Called Tata Tea, then Tata Global Beverages; renamed in 2020 |
| Group | Tata group | One of India’s largest business groups, led by the holding company Tata Sons |
Tata Consumer Products is a listed Indian food and drink company. Besides Tetley, it owns Tata Tea, the best-selling tea in India, Good Earth teas in the United States and teapigs in the UK, plus coffee, salt, pulses and snack brands. It took its current name in February 2020, when Tata Global Beverages merged with the consumer products business of Tata Chemicals. In 2024 it bought Capital Foods, maker of Ching’s Secret, and the herbal tea brand Organic India.
So Tetley is a British brand with Indian owners. For how it compares with the other big names, see our guide to who owns the big tea brands.
What is the Tata group?
The Tata group is one of India’s oldest and largest business groups, founded in the 19th century by Jamsetji Tata. Its main holding company, Tata Sons, sits above more than 100 companies. They range from Tata Steel and Tata Motors, owner of Jaguar Land Rover, to the IT firm TCS and the Taj hotels. Much of Tata Sons is owned by charitable trusts, so a large share of the group’s profits funds philanthropy. That makes Tetley’s ultimate ownership structure surprisingly similar to Twinings’, where a charitable foundation also sits at the top.
How Tata bought Tetley
Tata Tea had been working with Tetley for years before it bought it. The two formed an export joint venture in 1992, and Tata tried to buy Tetley in the mid-1990s. In February 2000 it succeeded, paying £271 million, about $432 million at the time, and outbidding the US food group Sara Lee.
The deal was a leveraged buyout. Tata set up a special company that borrowed most of the money against Tetley’s own future earnings, so it did not have to pay the full price from its own cash. It was the first successful deal of its kind by an Indian company. Business Today later described it as the catalyst for a wave of Indian takeovers abroad, which came to include Tata’s purchases of the steelmaker Corus and Jaguar Land Rover. A small Indian tea company had bought a much larger British brand, and Tata became the world’s second-largest tea company.

The tea bag pioneer
Tetley’s biggest claim to fame in Britain is the tea bag. Tea bags were common in the United States long before they caught on in the UK. Tetley introduced them to British shoppers in 1953. It followed with the round tea bag in 1989, after consumer tests, and a drawstring bag in 1997. Today almost all tea sold in UK supermarkets comes in bags.
What Tata ownership has meant
- A global brand. Under Tata, Tetley operates in about 40 countries. It is the biggest-selling tea in Canada and the second-biggest in the UK and the US.
- Indian supply and know-how. Tata combined Tetley’s supply chain with its own Indian and Sri Lankan tea operations.
- Scrutiny over wages. In 2014, reports by Columbia Law School and The Guardian said some workers on Assam estates linked to Tata were paid below the minimum wage. Tata appointed independent reviewers and later joined a UNICEF programme with the Ethical Tea Partnership to tackle child exploitation in Indian tea communities. Twinings faced similar pressure, as our review of its sourcing programme explains.
- New products. Tetley’s range has grown from builder’s tea into green tea, herbal infusions and decaf, many developed for international markets.
Is Tetley British or Indian?
Both, in a sense. Tetley is a British brand, founded in Yorkshire and still marketed as a British tea. Its owner, Tata Consumer Products, is Indian. That is common in the tea trade. Lipton, also founded in Britain, belongs to a Dutch-based company owned by private equity, as our Lipton ownership guide explains. Twinings, by contrast, is British-owned. See who owns Twinings.
Tetley and its rivals
- PG Tips, Tetley’s oldest UK rival, belongs to LIPTON Teas and Infusions. See who owns PG Tips.
- Yorkshire Tea, from the same county where Tetley began, is still family owned. See the Yorkshire Tea story.
